The International Conference on Historical Cryptology (HistoCrypt 2024) invites submissions of papers to its annual conference on historical cryptology. The conference will be held in June 25-27, 2024 at Oxford and Bletchley Park, UK.
HistoCrypt addresses all aspects of historical cryptology/cryptography including work in closely related disciplines (such as history, history of ideas, computer science, AI, (computational) linguistics, or image processing) that is sufficiently formalized or applied, with relevance to historical ciphertexts and codes.
HistoCrypt 2024 is going to be bigger and more exciting than ever before! That means there are a lot of options and the arrangements are more complicated than in previous years. Please read this carefully so as to ensure you get the right tickets and get the best out of HistoCrypt.

Keynote 1
The legacy of Bletchley Park on UK Mathematics
by Daniel Shiu
World War II, and Bletchley Park in particular, saw the introduction of academic mathematicians to the problems of cryptanalysis. The effect of mathematical thinking on cryptanalysis is well-studied, but in this talk we consider the opposite question: how did mathematicians’ experiences at Bletchley Park affect their subsequent mathematical work? We will consider three main themes: a shift in statistical thinking, the use of computers in mathematics, and the persistence of collaboration between individuals who met at BP.
Keynote 2
American encryption policy 1950-1990
by Dr Sarah Mainwaring
Today’s talk explores American encryption policy 1950-1990. Traditionally, documented as a battle between privacy and national security interests, we will consider examples that suggest an additional debate was ongoing between the American government and American telecommunications sector that continues until today.

Keynote 3
Bletchley Park, Neptune, and the Kriegsmarine
by David Kenyon
On 5-6 June 1944 the codebreakers of Bletchley Park went to special effort to listen in on the response of the German Navy to the vast fleet of vulnerable Allied shipping crossing to Normandy that night. German message traffic from the period around D-Day survives, and Bletchley Park Trust holds a unique collection of these messages. A detailed examination of this material reveals a fascinating picture of just how effective GC&CS was in reading Naval Enigma, how this was communicated to Allied commanders, and exactly what the German navy did, or didn’t, do to repel the invasion.

Registration
Tickets are being sold via Eventbrite. Here’s the link: https://histocrypt2024.eventbrite.com (but nothing much will happen there until tickets go on sale on 18 March!)
- Space is limited! You’ll need to decide what tickets you need quickly before they run out.
- If you are the corresponding (or sole) author of an accepted paper, special tickets are available for you. These are cheaper, and not available for general sale, to ensure that one author of each accepted paper can come to the conference. If your paper is accepted, you will be given a ‘promo code’ which enables you to claim an author ticket. Please claim only one author ticket per paper. If you think you should have a code but did not receive it, please check with your co-authors before asking the Local Arrangements Committee (email to lac24@histocrypt.org).
- A small number of full-price tickets has also been reserved for co-authors of accepted papers, to ensure that you too can come to the conference. These are reserved until 1 May only, after which any remaining co-author tickets will be released for general sale. To access one of these tickets, please ask the Local Arrangements Committee for the relevant ‘promo code’ by emailing lac24@histocrypt.org.
- A small number of cheaper conference-no-dinner tickets is available. If you don’t want to come to the conference dinner on Wednesday 26 June, this is the option for you.
- This year, we’ve introduced a ‘Plus-One’ option. ‘Plus-One’ tickets are available for a limited time for partners who wish to come to the conference dinner and the Heritage Day at Bletchley, but not to the conference itself. Included in the Plus-One ticket is:
- A place at the conference dinner at St Peter’s College on Wednesday 26 June
- Travel to Bletchley on Thursday 27 June (and, if there’s space, travel back to Oxford on the 1700 hours coach)
- All the activities at Bletchley available to holders of conference tickets except the Bletchley Park Lecture and VIP Reception. If your partner wants to go to this, make sure you add the extra ticket to your basket. If you’re buying a Plus-One ticket for your partner, and you both want to go on a Guided Tour, or return to Oxford on the 2030 hours coach, you’ll need to add extra tickets for them (as well as your own) to your basket.
- Tickets don’t go on sale until 18 March when authors are notified about the acceptance of their papers.
- Authors using the ‘promo code’ for their special author or co-author ticket should choose a conference ticket. When you enter the promo code it will apply the discount and release a reserved ticket.
- If you have special dietary needs (eg allergies) please say so on the order form.
- If you’re bringing a partner as a Plus-One, please give their name and dietary needs on the order form (you’ll need to get their consent to do this).
- If you/your Plus-One partner might want to come to the informal dinner on Tuesday 25 June please say so on the order form.
- If you think you might stay over in Bletchley/Milton Keynes on Thursday 27 June please say so on the order form.

Travel & Accomodation
We want HistoCrypt 2024 to be a success! Please don’t hesitate to get in touch if you have special access needs or we need to make special arrangements. But please also bear with us, because we are constrained by limited space in conference halls, dining halls, coaches, and so on, and the budget is tight. It may be difficult for us to be as flexible as you would like, so please don’t be offended if it’s not possible to do what you request.
